University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad Scholar Researches in Legume Breeding with a focus on soybean

Dr. Chandrakant D. Soregaon Agronomy HallDr. Chandrakant D. Soregaon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, Karnataka, India, visits Iowa State University as part of a 3-month training program. At Iowa State, Dr. Soregaon is hosted by Dr. Arti Singh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy. Dr. Chandrakant Soregaon received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India.

During his stay at Iowa State University, Dr. Soregaon conducted training and exposure on Research in Legume Breeding, focusing on soybean and protein extraction and SDS-PAGE to determine Lipoxygenase and 11S/7S globulins in soybean. The 11S/7S soybean proteins ratio may influence the textual quality (firmness & smoothness) of tofu in soybean. When he returns to India, Dr. Soregaon plans to take the knowledge and experience gained at ISU to broaden his teaching and research areas. During this international training and exposure program, Dr. Soregaon appreciates the encouragement and support of Dr. Asheesh K. Singh, Professor of Agronomy. He will also remember the opportunity given to work with Dr. Antonella, Dr. Dinakaran, and other labmates in Dr. Arti’s lab.

The 3-month training program between the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, and Iowa State University, Ames, is funded by the World Bank-Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP), an Institutional Development Plan (IDP) titled “Augmenting Quality and Relevance of Higher Agricultural Education through Enhanced Learning Outcome and Entrepreneurship Development.” Dr. Soregaon and his seven colleagues have valued their time and experiences at Iowa State University and want to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Mahadev B. Chetti, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Global Programs office, and all the faculty of ISU hosting the eight young faculty.
