2019 Feeding the World Seminar Series

The Feeding the World Seminar Series kicked off its 13th year on Thursday, August 29, 2019.  Seminars will continue through fall semester with a variety of speakers and topics.  The next seminar,  "Farmer-to-Farmer Program, Middle East and North Africa" featuring Gretchen Hansen, Volunteer Recruiter for Land O'Lakes International Development, will take place Thursday, September 5, 3:40 - 5:00 p.m. in 1204 Kildee Hall. The seminar series is sponsored by the M.E. Ensminger International Chair in Animal Science and the Raymond and Mary Baker Chair in Global Agriculture. Full seminar series details here

Gilman Scholarship Program

The Gilman Scholarship Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is assisted in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The Gilman Program provides grants for undergraduate U.S. citizens of limited financial means to study and intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. 

The Gilman Scholarship Program application for Cycle 1 is open for applicants whose programs start between December 2019 and October 2020. This cycle encompasses Winter 2020, Spring 2020, Summer 2020, Fall 2020, and Academic Year 2020-2021 programs. Gilman Scholarship advisors at ISU are Shelley Taylor (CALS Global Programs) and Anne Grevstad-Nordbrock (ISU Study Abroad Center).

Dean's Leadership Students to Participate in Conference

Students that participate in the Dean’s Global Food and Agriculture Leadership Program in Rome are organized into teams and spend the spring semester working on different projects for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the United Nations. At the end of their program, the students travel to Rome to present their final work to the staff at FAO.

The work and dedication put in by the students is phenomenal and this year was no exception. Timothy Robinson, Livestock Policy Officer with the Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch of FAO has invited all nine student participants to present their work at the 9^th annual Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) Multi Stakeholder Partnership (MSP) meeting which will be held September 9 - 13, 2019 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. According to their website, “Presentations, panels, posters, field tours, and discussion throughout the week will focus on the theme of Innovation for Sustainable Livestock Systems, highlighting examples from throughout the world of innovative solutions to address sustainable livestock production and agrifood systems.” Aside from sharing their research findings, the students will also have the opportunity to network and learn from other attendees from around the region and globe.

The 9 students that will be attending include; Toluwani Awokoya, Sophia Breuer, Alison Bueltel, Caryn Dawson, Shayla Holland, Amy Huynh Bettle, Maddy McGarry, Jake Sterle, and Riley Wilgenbusch. Program leaders for the 2019 summer “Rome program” include Steven Lonergan and Elisabeth Lonergan.

Toluwani Awokoya, Caryn Dawson, Madeline McGarry, Jake Sterle, and Riley Wilgenbusch will be presenting their research on “Sustainability Implications of a Shift to Plant-Based Diets”. Amy Bettle, Sophia Breuer, Alison Bueltel, and Shayla Holland will share about “An Evaluation of in vitro Meat as an Emerging Commercialized Protein Source”. Sophia Breuer said, “The opportunity to work with the UNFAO, my peers, and the CALS faculty and staff has been one of the best opportunities professionally and academically throughout my collegiate career. After all the long hours we put into our project, and presenting at FAO in Rome, getting invited to present again at the GASL Conference is just as rewarding to showcase our work again. I am so excited to be with my teammates again and to continue to learn and grow with them."

Visiting Student Group from China

CALS Global Programs along with the Department of Animal Science and Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition are hosting 7 visiting undergraduate students from Northeast Agricultural University in China through an educational program agreement. The visiting students will be on campus from August 13 - October 4, 2019. The Iowa State University mentors include Nicole Ferwerda (An Sci), Dr. Ranga Appuhamy Jayasooriya (An Sci), Dr. Aileen Keating (An Sci), Dr. Max Rothschild (An Sci), Nuria Acevedo (FSHN), Stephanie Clark (FSHN) and Xiaolei Shi (FSHN). The 8-week learning program between Iowa State University and Northeast Agricultural University began in 2018.

Ag Biodiversity Conference

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will be hosting faculty and students from Yunnan Agricultural University, China Agricultural University, Hokkaido University and Yeungnam University for the 2019 Ag Biodiversity Conference from September 16-22. The conference theme is: Honoring the Legacy of Norman Borlaug: Inspiring the Next Generation of Agricultural Professionals. Expected participants will have the opportunity to interact with Iowa State University students through a poster session on sustainable agriculture, assist with Inspire Day in Creston, Iowa and experience cultural attractions in Des Moines, Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota.  For more information, contact Denise Bjelland or Shelley Taylor

Assam Agricultural University Delegation Visits ISU

Students and a faculty member from Assam Agricultural University in Assam, India visited Iowa State University as part of a cultural and exposure opportunity to agriculture in the state of Iowa. The students in attendance are currently last year undergraduate students with interest in precision agriculture, horticulture and veterinary medicine. During their visit, the group participated in many farm visits to research and teaching farms through Iowa State University, local farm visits as well as industry visits around Central Iowa. The highlight for the group was having the opportunity to attend the Iowa State Fair and being able to see an array of agriculture on a broad scale. The CALS Global Programs Department along with Dr. Madan Bhattacharyya, Professor in the Department of Agronomy, assisted in the arrangements for the visiting group.

Welcome New Student Travel Consultants!

CALS Global Programs welcomed 5 new student travel consultants on Monday, August 26!  Student travel consultants (STCs) are students with prior study abroad experience who work part-time in the CALS Global Programs office. Study Abroad and Skills?

Studying abroad helps students develop various valuable skills. A survey of 403 responses from CALS study abroad student returnees shows 31.51% developed communication skills and 17.12% advanced their academic learning. Other skills learned include adaptability, cultural competence and more.
